I'd be interested in a set in stainless also.

A quick update:

Thanks for the compliments on the welding (its no easy task!), and I'm glad to hear there is interest in these pipes...

Good news:
I got some prototype headpipes in (farmed out for CNC mandrel bending) and they look sweet!

Bad news:
I went to start welding up some belly sections from the laser cut flat cones (see picture in previous post) and was having an impossible time, much warping, burn through, cursing, and almost throwing them across the room....

Then I realized the cutter screwed up and made them from 26 gauge (~0.017" thick)!!! This stuff is impossible to deal with, even if I could weld it I would worry about cracking and such in use...
(The welded prototypes in the pictures are 24 gauge)...

This was the cutters fault so he SHOULD make me new parts (I will find out on Monday)...

So I have a question for you guys, now that I need new parts, I was thinking of getting the new parts made from 23 gauge instead of 24 this would be a little thicker and stronger and make the welding easier, but the pipes slightly heavier...

What do you think?

If all goes well I will work on the H2 but want to get this H1 version well under way first...

Can you estimate the final weight of a complete set of 24 guage pipes compared to the 23 guage?

And did you get a chance to weigh Dave's H1 Dencos to compare to these in stainless?

my feelings...id rather live with a little heavier set of pipes if its easier to weld...less distortion....in my opinion id have no problem with em....id be ok with heavier weight if overall quality is better.....

Compared to the stock exhausts, these will be a feather weight.
Go with the thicker gauge material.

Just did an informal bolt stress anylisis today comparing standard steel to stainless, to black oxide cap screws (M6) to settle a bet; I lost.

I didn't realize how weak stainless fasteners are; really bad for high strength applications and the bolt stretch was horrible.

Might also keep in mind that RB has said that the only chambers he has had crack when rubber mounted were SS.

The only problem will be that stainless tends to work harden which isn't ideal for the vibrations from a triple. You might want to re-anneal your pipes near the rear mounting tabs ....

Pipes look great, bravo on the project!

Strongly agree to stress relieve the hard points.

I have a German "Vampire" stainless exhaust system on my 86 Yam SRX & it broke off a mounting flange, had to weld it back on. My 600 single probably vibrates as much as a triple - so I agree with the above.

I've been welding 20 gauge (.036) in for floor pans on a old Datsun, its thicker & not much heavier. not suggesting you go that thick but definitely heavier then what you've got would be better, 22 GA. maybe (.030)???

the thicker the better

still watching this thread with GREAT interest........

"thoughtful" rubbermounting should result in chambers that will remain crack free.

Howdy All,
Sorry about the lack of updates for the last couple weeks, my fabricating hands have been tied (see below)…

I did get things sorted out with the laser cutter to replace the bad (26 gauge parts) and will make prototypes now out of 24 and 22 gauge for testing to see how all works out…

No plans on starting an S2 line yet, I will probably go for H2 second, but need to prove the concept with the H1 design first. Does anyone have S2 Denco’s I can measure?

Just aquired a nice metal lathe to machine the manifolds, and will be moving along again…

I still hope to have pipes avail. For the H1 by the end of October…

After returning from my fishing trip I got wrangled into helping the Flaming Lotus Girls (a group of industrial artist in San Francisco whom I have done fabrication for, for several years now) finish their massive metal sculpture Mutopia!

I did some fabrication on these large central copper parts called "Root Balls" and designed and built large seperatable, forklift-able racks, to fit this crazy thing into a standard 8' x 8' x 40' shipping container...

They gave me a free ticket to Burningman, were I intended to just go for the weekend and see the sculpture, however everyone was so exhausted from being in the desert setting up and running the thing for 10+ days that I stayed on to lead the tear down shift (I was one of the only ones left whom knew how to take it apart and pack it!)...

I just returned home this Wen. night at 11pm for a total of 6 days in the desert for my 13 consecutive year at the event!

The art piece was absolutely amazing and quoted by many as the coolest thing at the event!

Here are some pictures…

Dude, compared to those rootballs, the H1 chambers look like a walk in the park. Nice work on those sculptures! :)

Back on topic now...

Here's some CNC'ed head pipe blanks, nice constant diameter throughout the bend...
Image

Got the new lathe fired up dialed and broken in...

Turns the stainless material for the manifolds well (first test cut)...

Here's some practice cuts, I hope to make them fit up tighter then the orig. Dencos...
